May 17, 2019Number of years in business: 28Why did you decide to set up your business near South Philly?My in-laws always had a grocery store at this location from the ’60s. (Even though it’s near Center City, we are still considered South Philly, five blocks south of Market Street). After I married Carlos Alvarez (1969), we took over the grocery store until 1984. In 1988, we had the opportunity to move here from Packer Park and opened Cedrone’s Flowers in ’90What is your favorite thing about South Philly?I cannot just say one thing, it’s impossible! Growing up in the ’50s and ’60s were so very special. From our little home in the middle of the block, my school, Francis Read, and neighbors that became more like family. Saturdays during the summer, you can hear the kid selling “fresh pretzels” in the early morning while still in bed, the handsome, South Philly guys washing their cars to go out that night and of course, Mommy giving out the chores of cleaning every week! And then, the best, Sunday morning! The aroma of Mom frying the sausage and meatballs for the “gravy” for Sunday dinner. South Philly is and will always be ME!Anything new South Philly residents should know about?It’s been my pleasure to be able to serve the residents, family and friends of South Philadelphia selling what is the most beautiful thing in the world … flowers.
